GPS:

MSBCS-BCSII-6: The student will utilize database software.

a) Identify uses of database software and careers related to database.

b) Identify and explain database terminology.

c) Create and save basic database related to business and computer science careers.

d) Retrieve, edit, manipulate, and print various databases

 

 

Amount of Time Needed: Lesson plans should cover 3-4 55-minute class periods

 

Warm-Up:

Day 1—Watch Discovery Education videos together—2 segments—“Gathering Information for a Database” (02:54) and “Using a Computer to Organize a Database” (04:20)

Day 2—Visit http://online.onetcenter.org/find/ . Type “database” in the Keyword Search box. Look through the list of database-related career fields. Click on and read at least 3 different job descriptions.

Day 1—

  1. Complete the Warm Up Activity
  2. Students should research 10 business and computer science careers using the Internet, and complete the Job Data Table worksheet. Don’t know where to start? Try these sites:

    2. http://stats.bls.gov/OCO/OCOS042.HTM

 

Day 2—

  1. Complete the Warm Up Activity
  2. Teacher should introduce Microsoft Access to students using the overhead projector. Open program and review similarities and differences between Access and other Office programs. Review toolbars and introduce database vocabulary words.
  3. Teacher should use PowerPoint with screenshots to guide students step by step to create a new database using their completed Job Data Table worksheet.
  4. Create Job Snapshots table in Access.

Day 3—

  1. Complete the Warm Up Activity
  2. Teacher should continue using PowerPoint to guide students to modify table, create a form, and create a report.
  3. Students should print Job Snapshots Table and Jobs Report.

Day 4—(if needed)

  1. Complete the Warm Up Activity
  2. Students should complete any remaining activities from the PowerPoint.
